A Time For Rest, Part II

“Life moves pretty fast.  If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you might miss it.”  Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

As we’ve come to learn the irreplaceable value of rest, it is our heart’s desire to see others get the rest that they need- to take off the heavy burdens of life and allow peace to enter in.

A year ago my (Judy) parents, who’d been in the throws of a heavy season of life were given an opportunity to get away, just the two-of-them.  Excited about their upcoming vacation, they began to scour the internet for the perfect place for rest.  They happened upon the site of SonShine Oaks Retreat .  This find, however, was no coincidence; on the contrary, this was the place where God would provide a much needed recharge for their bodies, minds and souls.

Be StillAnd KnowThat IAm God

Having heard the rave reviews upon their return, Lee and I decided to go and check this place out for ourselves during our recent visit to Charleston, SC.  SonShine Oaks Retreat is a haven of rest tucked away in the beautiful island of Wadmalaw, about a 30ish minute drive from Charleston.

Upon entering the main home, weary souls are welcomed by hosts Scott, Sheryl and Yvonne.  You immediately feel like part of the family as you are immersed in their stories of God’s goodness and faithfulness over the years.

Spacious interiors, comfortable beds and beautiful decor invite visitors to exhale the cares of the world and breathe in life.  Rejuvenation is provided in many forms.  A wet and dry sauna, pools, massage tables, and an exercise studio are available for bodies in need of a little TLC.  Rocking chairs and handmade benches are also tucked away in scenic spots along the grounds for those in need of a quiet recharge of the soul (and be sure to ask Scott the story behind those handmade benches!).

If beauty heals, then this retreat is a balm to the weary.  Wadmalaw wildlife of various forms take up residence on the picturesque grounds.  Sit and watch red cardinals flutter between spanish moss laden oaks, enjoy the sights of colorful dragonflies buzzing about, grab a picture of an egret casting a mirrored reflection on the water or take in the beauty of a Lowcountry sunset from the river.  There are even resident miniature horses always ready for a pat on the head!

If refraining from toxic living is a burden you carry, SonShine Oaks is a sanctuary of healthy living.  Essential oils diffuse the air while organic products are readily available upon request.  Here visitors can take their ease from the fight to live healthy while traveling.
